Gimme a Black on Black City Connect Jersey
When I’m looking for a new White Sox hat, the first thing I look at is the black on black options. To me, they’re simple but complex all at once. It’s something I never really thought about until I was working at Invisible Records in the early 2000s. It’s an industrial music record label and if you’re not familiar with the genre, lot of black clothing is all you need to know. The label owner Martin walked in one morning and said “we’re doing a black Invisible logo shirt”. This was unsurprising as 99% of our shirts were black. But this was something else, a black logo on a black shirt. It quickly became the #2 selling shirt at the label (Pigface’s “Eat Shit You Fucking Redneck” was forever #1). They still sell it today.

After we started FromThe108 and had sold a couple two three shirts, I proposed the same idea to Beef and MSS. They met it with similar skepticism, but ultimately agreed. We quickly sold out of hoodies, bottle man logo shirts, #108ing shirts. Man, we should bring those back.

We also did a city jersey battle before city jerseys were a thing in baseball, but the one line that stood out when re-reading was this:
“Our guy ‘Loaf ran a poll asking the folks what jersey they would like in the 2019 campaign. With no shock to MSS, the Sox fans came through and picked a retro jersey over a city one. ‘Loaf then took the “Steve Jobs Approach” that you folks don’t know what you want ’til you see it.”
The point is that even if it sounds crazy, people like that color scheme when they see it. And more importantly, the team that brought us the Blackout Game should embrace it.
Any of their logos would look great, the Southside across the chest would look great, and I’d expect a Chicago flag in there somewhere as well. The matte black batting helmet with a Sox logo with some gloss to it would also look epic in black on black.
Maybe it’s the industrial kid in me, maybe it’s my love for Johnny Cash, or maybe it’s that I think Smell the Glove is a generational album. I think all black city connects would be electric.
