The 5 – We need a HERO! Who will fill the void of Matt “El Nino” Albers

Two months into the season, the 108’ers are still looking for someone to fill the void of our group favorite from 2016, Matt “El Nino” Albers.  It is hard to replace a man with such passion for the game and with such an amoebic frame.   Let’s take a look at the early candidates………..

albers_el_nino
R.I.P. Big Buddy.

Tyler Saladino – Truth be told, last year’s utility man and friend of the 108 #southsidestachemen would be the no brainer choice here, but then a few things happened.  1) His bat got cold a few weeks into the season. Even though he was still the steady glove man at every position, he was in and out of the lineup more. Thus we didn’t get to #raisethestache for him as much.  2) He fucked up his back and landed on the DL.  Now, if you are really super colorful and insane, we can still cheer for Tyler on the DL, but it doesn’t always work out.  We still have HIGH HOPES for Tyler, but we’ll just have to wait and see.  Get well soon buddy.

saladino-308

Derek Holland – I would say he’s the leader in the clubhouse right now. He acts the fool all the time and has been producing on the field.  Look, this is a rebuild and as long as Derek takes the ball every 5 days, he can have a James Shields start every so often and it won’t hurt his status as a 108 fave.  Just look at Matt Albers track record last year from about May 15th on (save for that faithful day in Flushing Meadows).

Holland1280_mq7mcm8c_3hoooid7

Tommy Kahnle – This fella right here has been disgustingly good, but that’s not why he’s on this list.  A few weeks ago, another former Colorado Rockies player LaTroy Hawkins deemed him “the worst teammate EVER”.  Now, when you take a look at Mr. Kahnle, I can’t help but agree with Paul Sporer that he has a very punchable face, but let’s walk this comment back to it’s source for a minute.  LaTroy Hawkins, I remember LaToya when he was here in Chicago, with the Cubs and boy did this mutherfucker cry about every goddamn thing.  I immediately thought to myself any player who would want to punch LaToya in the face is fine by me and deserves consideration for 108 fave.

ct-tommy-kahnle-strikeouts-white-sox-20170430

Avisail Garcia – Everyone’s favorite this year (so far) but was roundly hated every single year before that. Much like the kid with an undiagnosed learning disability, Avi seems to have fixed the issue and is making up for lost time.  Location is great for the 108 (our front porch if you will) and love of the BBW women makes it a no brainer. However, his increasing batting average and popularity is something to consider, but he’ll always be our eskimo brother, like Prince.

USP MLB: BALTIMORE ORIOLES AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX S BBA USA IL

Yolmer Sanchez – Now here’s a guy who already has quite a bit of love from White Sox twitter, but needs to be in the running.  Not only has he  been stroking the ball on the field, but he’s an incredulous goof off of the field.  You can’t be on White Sox twitter for 5 mins without seeing a crazy gif of him.  He’s probably a little more in the Melky Cabrera camp in that we can’t claim him for our own, but when he’s going good, boy is he fun to watch.

BONUS EXTRA CONTENT!!!

Melky Cabrera – Truth be told….we can’t include Melky here.  He’s everyone’s favorite. It would be unfair for us to choose him, plus he plays LF and is basically is far away from the 108 as any player on the diamond.  That being said, we are going to miss him when he ends up on a contender in August.

Let us know who you think should be the new FAVE of the 108. Tweet it at us at @fromthe108.

– BeefLoaf & MSS (kinda, the ‘Loaf did all the heavy lifting)

Also a quick PSA for those who don’t follow us on Twitter. We are running low on the small sizes for the Jersey Demolition shirt.  If you wear something other than a XL or 2XL, you might wanna order soon.  Todd Frazier wears an XL, just FYI.  He is the proud owner of this shirt, which as we have discussed either means he has a excellent sense of humor or maybe he and Sale weren’t the best of friends.

Order your shirt here –  http://fromthe108.bigcartel.com/

You Do You White Sox Twitter.

Hey, I see ya.  I know you are trying to stay relevant, trying to capitalize on recent internet headlines.  And you know what? You do you.  Wanna know why?  Cause us Sox fans, we are never satisfied.  If there is a fanbase that can be accused of moving the goal posts more than the Sox fanbase, I’d like to see it.  Confused?

Last week, I woke up to this little article from the Tribune, you can read it here.

White Sox ‘cash me ousside’ tweet falls flat with some fans.

I saw the reactions, a solid mix of good and bad, but to the ones saying this was done in bad taste, you are taking this shit too seriously.  If a tweet makes you unfollow your baseball team, you gotta take a step back, have a real conversation with someone and reevaluate your social media life.  This is entertainment, in a world where tweets go out every second, making an impact is a huge deal.  And this did it’s job, it provoked responses.

cash_me

Anytime a big company tries to capitalize on some flavor of the moment, it’s gonna get looked at as cheesy. Lame. Whatevs.  But if the Sox Twitter was stale? People gonna bitch about that too.  So it’s a no win.  Trolls ain’t buying tickets, and most die-hard fans don’t know how to use Twitter anyways.

A question of marketing always seems to come up, mostly that the Sox don’t do it well. I disagree, I think they do an excellent job trying to appeal to many different bases.  Problem is, especially this year, they don’t really have much star power to use right now.  Abreu and Q.  Frazier. But some of these young kids got it going on.  Tim Anderson can be the next big thing, believe you me.  He’s poised to make it happen.  Just hope he doesn’t go the way of the Beckham. So they should be blasting him out this season if he does anything of value.

This new crop of youngsters has some pretty unique people in it.  Carson “Filthy” Fulmer, dude is crazy nice.  Zach Burdi, another guy who is just so frickin’ nice it makes you sick.  Plus he’s from Downers Grove, so you gotta pull for the local guy right?  I am high on Giolito and Moncada too, but the ace in the hole (as far as social media star power) is Michael Kopech.

The loving couple.

Kopech dates Brielle Biermann, which I had to ask my wife if she knew who that was.  Apparently she is the daughter of a reality star and is making a push to be one herself. Or she is one already, I don’t really know.  All I know is that they made a big splash at SoxFest with the ladies.  Kopech tosses in the 100’s and he dates a reality TV star.  That’s huge. If we can’t capitalize on that to get some younger fans, I don’t know what to say.   She (and he for that matter) don’t look bad.

Here is another of Brielle. For educational purposes. And BeefLoaf.

So keep taking these risks, and market these new guys to us fans!  You keep doing you, eff the haters.  Hell, if we get a little reaction on a tweet we pop bottles.  Honestly, we’d pop bottles anyways, but a few retweets is a great excuse for our wives.

Have any good marketing ideas?  Send them to us at @fromthe108!  Or post them on our FB page here!

SoxFest 2017 – We met some people, we gave out some shirts.

In case you haven’t been paying attention to Twitter, SoxFest was last weekend.  If you’ve never been, and you like waiting in lines like the former U.S.S.R., you should really go.  But instead of getting bread or cheese, you get autographs from your favorite White Sox players!  Plus about all the free stuff you can handle.

I went in with 2 guys (@ricojr16 and @bigsexxy_75 #wallymoney), 2nd year we have done the ‘fest together. We always have a great time, this year was no different.  Lacking the star power of previous years, the attendance was a little smaller than last, but what a treat for anyone that bought tickets.

In other years, I was focused on getting bobbles signed.  Since the majority of the guys there were new, and didn’t have a Sox bobble, I was more focused on speaking the word of the 108 and getting baseballs signed.  I was prepared with 108 t-shirts and business cards.

I also had a special shirt that Chorizy thought up that we wanted to present to Rick Hahn to show our excitement and appreciation on his off season.  Because I am really lucky, I ran into him. Rick loved the shirt and asked for his cut.  I assured him once we made some money, we’d send him a check.

Rick Hahn is hella nice, just so you know.  I have met him a couple of times, both very briefly, but this last meeting was fantastic.  He was with his son, who was laughing the whole time, and he dropped a “fucking” during the course of our conversation.  I am sure he was terrified that I would eat him, so he treated me real nice like.  Giving Rick a shirt was on my list of goals, glad I was able to get one to him.  Also, over in that corner, the lovely Alexa was taking pics for fans with Dan Jennings. I wondered how many people wanted a pic with both of them.  Hmmmmmmm……..

If you haven’t heard of #southsidestachemen you better read this before you read below, cause shit won’t make sense.   We ran into Tim Anderson and Tyler Saladino in the Sox Social Lounge, so of course I let Tyler know who I was. We chatted for a bit about the contest, which is awesome, and I gave him a shirt.  Tyler is another really nice guy, engaged with the fans, and stood around forever talking about the original tweet and how awesome the contest is gonna be. So much awesome talk that I am scared that we’ll screw this up.  He also signed about a bijillion autographs.  Including the t-shirt that we will give the winner on the #southsidestachemen contest.  So get to growing guys (and girls, ewww) get this shirt and some free tickets!

Also in the lounge we ran into fellow 108 supporter Jason Benetti! Jason let us know that he’d be down for a game this year, so we are gonna hold him to it.  Didn’t have a size medium shirt on me, so I gave him one the next day. Jason then did something that got the entire 108 excited, he said they’d put it on the prize shelf.  Can you fucking imagine?  Ha.  I had Jason and Ed Farmer sign a shirt that we can give away too sometime during the season, look for this on our Twitter or FB.

Carlton Fisk was also in the Social Lounge taking pics with fans.  Was fun to chat with him about the blog and take a quick pic.  He was looking good, walking bad.  All those HOF years behind home have taken their toll.

20170127_202732_resized

And here’s a pic of me with Todd Frazier.  Todd is not a 108 supporter as he has had us blocked for about a year now.  He distracted me with a fist bump and being a cool guy so I didn’t ask to be unblocked.  He had a bum paw, said it was nothing to worry about for the season.  I hope so! We’re gonna need some good numbers from you Todd, so we can trade you away at the ASB.

Having breakfast on Saturday we ran into ROY 1983, Ron Kittle.  Ron is always good for stories and some dirt on the 80’s guys.  Told us some great stories and bullshitted with the best.  Asked about the shirts, so I gave him one.  We took a pic and he even put one on! Awesome.  We hope to see you this summer in the 108 Ron, first and final beer on us! Again, hell of a nice guy.  Sunday he said hi and we chatted some more, Harold Baines showed up too, was a great time.  Always a fun time when you are eating pancakes with your favorite player as a kid.

img_51061_resized

I always said I’d never pay to go to Soxfest and now, 2 years in a row, I have done just that.  If you like Sox baseball and feeling like one of the guys, the Sox really make these guys available to do just that.  They make the guys more personable.  Hell, I took a piss with Jacob Petricka and Eric Soderholm, while security watched us all. I was most impressed when Eric asked me how the sinks worked, and I told them I was happy to see them washing their hands.  I came home with tons of stories and lots of hope that we can actually make this rebuild work.  I liked the feeling at SoxFest, optimism was all around.  Hearing people that were still excited for this season was awesome.  Plus I hope we gained a few more followers.

Soxfest 2017 has put the 108 on the map.  If you haven’t already you can see me get skunked in trivia here. You can see our good friend Cyndee get a Cuban Sandwich here.

Didn’t get shirt?  Follow us on Twitter and start telling your friends! Hell, add your friends on our FB site. We have boxes of shirts that we’ll give away this year with a few new ones planned to sell.  We’ll keep you in the loop.

Get that ‘stache a growing for opening day!  Tweet at us and Tyler with the hashtag #southsidestachemen.  Free tickets!  Free shirt!

Tyler Saladino’s Challenge to White Sox Fans!!!

Yesterday , in the Twitterverse, something amazing happened.  An actual player in the White Sox organization responded to one of our tweets.  Here is that tweet –

screen-shot-2017-01-17-at-9-54-29-pm

To which we got this –

screen-shot-2017-01-17-at-9-56-47-pm

Pretty effin cool, just like our man Ty Fu and his wonderful ‘stache. You have about 75 days to grow something that we’ll all be pround off.  Get to work! To be in the contest, tweet us @fromthe108 and Tyler @SaladinoTyler and hashtag it #southsidestachemen. And of course you NEED to include a pic of your facial hair entry!

If free tix from Tyler isn’t sweet enough, you will also win a brand spanking new @fromthe108 T-shirt! It’s 100% Cotton and 100% awesome.  We went all out and made it 3 color with a back! If you have any questions send us a message on our FB account or DM us on Twitter.

In the aftermath of this exchange, almost immediately our thoughts go right to Chorizy-E who changes his facial hair like he’s evading the law (which he might be).   Let’s take a look at the highlights of Chorizy’s facial hair game so you contest entrants know how high (or low) you’ll have to go to get the free tickets from Tyler and a shirt from us!

2017-01-17

MSS’s Take – A great shot of the both Chorizy and Beef.  Look at that fu manchu on Chorizy.  Without the crazy eyes, he almost looks normal.  I’d rather see some longer side burns, maybe some ram horns almost connecting, which will really put this up to a solid 7.5 on the “Yeah, I made out with my 3rd cousin” scale of 10.

‘Loaf Take – This is deserving of a participation trophy and nothing else.  I look good in that pic tho’

12190795_10101834430468628_6440562889945297717_n

MSS’s Take – This was just really spot on.

‘Loaf Take – Derek Smalls has aged quite a bit.  At least he is still stuffing his pants with produce. Too bad it’s lettuce.

33584_101525373246548_6188221_n

MSS’s Take – Oh for pete’s sake.  Everything about this is just awful.  Short hair and just a ‘stache. I’d call the cops on this guy if he showed his face in my neighborhood.  I’ve seen this guy before, mostly at public pools trying to be incognito. Maybe wearing a “Mustache Rides 5¢” t-shirt maybe not, but you know he’s saying it to any girl over the age of 15.

Loaf Take – This is a fairly vanilla ‘stache (with a hint of bourbon, obviously) and it probably wouldn’t win this contest, but it’s still enjoyable

10300438_10203944698518588_7452330694327334785_n

MSS’s Take – I see hardly anything wrong in this pic. Aside from all the grey hair.

‘Loaf Take – This is about a ‘stache contest, not a, let’s see how unemployed I can look contest.

great-tiger

MSS’s Take – Wow.  I had never seen this pic before.  He does look like Great Tiger getting a punch in the gut.  He looks young too. Like really young.

‘Loaf Take – 8th grade graduation picture…..I think…..it’s possible that Walt Frazier and Keith Hernandez intervened, we’ll never know

1915219_188632747868_5219809_n

MSS’s Take – Here we have Quernzy with the guy who played Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite Why do we have that in amongst…..DEAR GOD THAT IS CHORIZY.

Loaf Take – A little inside baseball, but Chorizy was forced to have that hair style and clothing while he was on parole a few years back (court mandated)

257692_2301890027475_2704527_o

MSS’s Take – Is that a duckface? Really?  On the positive side, really smooth cheeks. The facial hair is intriguing, makes ya wonder. What you wonder about is up to you.

Loaf Take – This is a strong entrant. It is similar to the opening picture, except he really gives a fk in this shot.  This could be in the running.

2017-01-18

MSS’s Take – I like this style, the crazy goatee, kinda System Of A Down-ish, long hair.  But seriously, is that a duckface too?  And is that Boones Farm? SMH.

Loaf Take – Always in great cardiovascular shape, Chorizy and his facial hair are sweating through their t-shirt after playing some billiards.

560678_4918951852385_1364578496_n

MSS’s Take – Buddy Chorizy! A time tested look that is classic. Now, he can’t tun water into High Life (really it’s not that far off to begin with) but he can turn $20 into a liquid party.  A liquid party that he will more than likely pass out at, wake up later and ask why we didn’t get him tacos.  Cause we thought you were dead brah.

Loaf Take – Chorizy always wanted to be in the clergy, this was his last and failed attempt, for obvious reasons

MSS disclaimer – I have always been jealous of the ability of Chorizy and BeefLoaf to grow elaborate facial hair in a matter of days.  They also can skip a haircut or 2 and it will be on their shoulders. These guys are hairy and they never have to wait too long to have a new style.  I haven’t cut my hair in 2 years just so I could fit in.
