Jane’s Addiction – Ritual de lo Habitual

First time you heard it

By the time I was into Jane’s they had broken up. All the kids I thought were cool had their shirts. Everything about the image they put out there just really appealed to me, that young guy struggling with religion. I remember buying the Article 1 version of the album (all white with Article 1 typed out on the front) and buying the shirt soon after. Getting that CD home, taking it out of the long cardboard box and putting it in my boombox was like opening a door. Aside from Been Caught Stealing my exposure to their music was really minimal. Stop! Just starts the record off great, high energy, melodic guitar, but a great vibe that really shows you who Jane’s is. The record is great front to back and when you finally end up at Classic Girl you have really taken a trip with this group. Each song has layers to it, they are just as interesting today as they were back then.

How often do you listen to it?

I honestly save it till I need it. Something will make me think of it and if I need a pump me up at the gym I will put it on.

Why is this your favorite album?

I think this album specifically, really gives you a taste of the early 90’s. It’s hard and fast, then slow and melodic. All 4 guys are just incredible musicians and this album was a swan song to the group. There isn’t a bad song on it.

It takes me right back to high school. It’s amazing to enjoy something as much as you first did almost 30 years ago. It’s held up all these years IMO. They made great music together.

Which track would be your walk up music?

It would have to be Stop! It just gets you moving and hits hard quick.
