I’ll admit, I was a bit apprehensive to give Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1988 seminal flick Coming to America a fair shot. I FUCKING LOVE the original, I’ve watched it probably a thousand times. I used to have a Soul Glo T-shirt.
I even expressed as much on Twitter.com.
But tonight, I relented and Mrs. BeefLoaf and I gave it a whirl on Amazon Prime. I couldn’t be happier that I did. Now look, this ain’t the kinda joint that’s going to Cannes to scoop accolades. Director Craig Brewer isn’t likely to be waltzing up to the podium to collect an Oscar or some shit, but it’s just some good old fashioned FUN!
The original Coming to America brought great humor and a wonderful message about knowing thyself and breaking tradition in all the right ways, in all the ways that make sense. Coming 2 America does the same but with all the nostalgia that you, the person who has loved the masterpiece from over 30 years ago would expect.
NO SPOILERS, but it’s formulaic in all the ways that make for entertaining comfort food. Maybe it’s my age, maybe it’s that I am staring down the barrel of 12 months of a pandemic that has changed my life (our lives) in ways I’m just starting to understand. Quite possibly, I’m just over worked lately and needed to smile and laugh and feel good about a piece of art, but for me, this movie worked great and I will watch again.
As I told Mrs. BeefLoaf, this movie was like seeing a band that is 20 years past their prime. They play their hits, with nods to the old days and enough surprises to make you jump out of your seat and yell. Of all the fucking bullshit I’ve watched to urge that sand through the hourglass waiting on my old life to come back, this was well worth the time. 110 Mins of Eddie Murphy humor.
