Ranking the tracks of A Very Special Christmas 3 | 12 Days of #108Mas
December 15, 2024
In 2022, I broke out one of the few pieces of Christmas vinyl I have, which is A Very Special Christmas. It’s a pretty darn good album. I decided I’d rank the songs, which you can check out in the blog below:
How can I not continue this and make it a gosh darn 108mas tradition?
So there is certainly some bias in me putting Ave Maria in the upper echelon, but I over Chris Cornell and I love to hear that track this time of year. I will say, I think Christmastime is the best track on the album and maybe that’s also my Chicago bias. Oi to the World is a really good cover and I end up with that and the original on a bunch of my playlists.
This is a better than usual “would listen”. All 3 of these are good tracks. The Rev Run one feels a little like going back to the well for a hit when Run DMC has one of the all time classics. Maybe it’s unfair to punish this track for that, especially since these rankings are sent directly to Santa Claus for him to launch bad xmas songs into the sun. But I did what I did.
We gotta spend a little time on the “Why?” category. Look, I am not a Dave Matthews fan, but holy fuck, what is this track? It’s long as hell, apparently live, and I have no clue what is going on in the song. I certainly don’t like it. Then Patti Smith, who I generally enjoy. But who the hell thought she’d be a great addition for a xmas album. It’s a weird ass rendition and it’s fittingly at the end so you can just say “ok, we’re done here.”

In 2023, I figured why not go right down the line and go to A Very Special Christmas 2?
