Chorizy-E goes to Riot Fest

Favorite Bands

Suicidal Tendencies was the best band I saw on Friday. Absolutely insane bass player. They’re a band that I don’t often listen to and not one I consider my favorites. But some bands just absolutely bring it live. That was the case with Suicidal.

Went to Cypress Hill for pure nostalgia and they ripped one of the best sets of the night. DJ Lord was incredible. Only downside is they closed with Jump Around. Why? Found a video with a bunch of clips:

I went in very excited to see Clutch on Saturday and they did not disappoint. They have such a unique sound and it comes through with force in their live show. They coulda went another hour and I don’t think anyone would have complained. They’re a band I’ll make sure not to miss next time through town.

I much more expected to be writing up Mastodon here, but the issues with their mics really hurt the set. Still very good, but I think Lamb of God was better. If I’m choosing an album to listen to, 9 times outta 10 I’m going to Mastodon. But on this day, Lamb of God stole the show. They sounded great and the performance was electric.

I feel I need to mention Rob Zombie here, because while I wasn’t into a lot of the solo Zombie stuff, he always brings a great show with visuals and stage set. But he makes the list for playing Thunder Kiss ’65. That tied the set together and 16 year old Chorizy-E was in his element.

Slayer closed out the weekend for us. They played for about 90-100 minutes if I was accurately tracking time at that point. I went to see them assuming it’ll be the last time I ever had a chance to. Not expecting a ton. I saw them probably 20 years ago with Pantera and that’s how I figured I’d remember them no matter what we got at Riot Fest. But they absolutely brought it. Starting with a nostalgic intro and firing into South of Heaven. The setlist hit on pretty much all of my favorite tracks. As insane as it is to yell out “Yes! Dead Skin Mask!”, there I was.

I Was Not Familiar With Your Game

When I first rolled in on Friday, I was just getting the lay of the land. I ran into my buddy Colin and he asked if I was going to check out Drug Church. I had nothing else on the agenda, so I headed over. I’m glad I did. Even though the lead singer nearly dropped dead on stage due to the heat, they still delivered a great set. It lives somewhere between 1990s alternative and hardcore (post-hardcore maybe?), so right up my alley. I’ll be back for more.

Miscellaneous Debris

I still got it. A girl walked up to me and the Dude and asked if we were selling drugs. We directed her to look for the guy who was walking around with a sign that said “shroom guy” with prices or the pre-roll guy.

The Dude turned to me and said “someone at Hot Topic is gonna lose their job when all these kids bring back the shit they bought to wear for these 3 days”.

Waiting for a port-a-potty, guy in front of me starts to head to one, turns and says “my girlfriend is in that one, but she didn’t lock the door.” I feel like he shoulda knocked and told her to lock the door. Am I supposed to pass this information to everyone else in line?

As usual, a lot of great shirts, but this was probably my favorite:

And of course there was RiotLand
