Edgar Quero – The Player Comps

This is Edgar Quero and we’re about to give you three player comp outcomes.
The White Sox are at that point in their (whatever number) rebuild that you really don’t know too much about the players that are expected to rise up from the earth like the second stanza of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and take over Sox Park. Sure you might know if they are ranked, or if you attended Sox Fest LIVE! you might have caught a quick glimpse and because they had uniforms on you could match player to name, but truthfully you don’t know much about these guys. Me either. Even prospect write-ups are of limited utility to you, the everyday fan.
So, it implores me to do something that the prospect hawks hate. PLAYER COMPS!! Now, the standard explanation from these folks is each player is different and you don’t want to layer a former player over a unique player, but that’s all bullshit. They just don’t want their fucked up player comp stuck in your head when dude fails. Who wants to be the guy that claimed Brooks Baldwin got some Luis Arraez to him? You don’t want to be the guy that claimed Nick Madrigal was destined for 3,000 hits and kept calling him LASERSHOW, do you? Nah, nobody does, but here, we’ll be brave and try it. Enjoy!
If Everything Goes Wrong Edgar Quero Will Be Francisco Mejia

The prospect prowess, the swing decisions from both sides of the plate, the playable defense. Francisco Mejia was a top rated prospect with the Rays and the balanced skill set across the board that had him positioned as their catcher of the future. In reality, none of the skills were quite strong enough to balance the board or carry the rest of the profile. Francisco turned him into a part time catcher who’s defense wasn’t strong enough and he washed out of the league fairly quickly.
If Things Go Pretty Good Edgar Quero Will Be Gregg Zaun

Picking Gregg Zaun for this spot is as boring as picking Friends as your favorite television show of all time. But Zaun sported a career .341 OBP and spent much of his decade and a half career as either a solid time share catcher or the primary backstop. The power was limited, but he had enough overall skills to turn in almost 14 bWAR for a career including a career high 3.6 bWAR in his age 34 season. If Quero could show Zaun’s dependable on-base and bat to ball skills and enough defense he’ll parlay that into a long career.
If Everything Goes Right Edgar Quero Will Be Jason Varitek

The maximum Edgar Quero in my mind is Jason Varitek. Smart defender, excellent hitter, with both average and on-base ability, and enough power to carry many full season loads of 120 OPS+ or so. This is your primary catcher that’s often an all-star or top 5 in the league at the position. A multiple time World Champion and team leader. This would be the dream of getting a franchise corner stone and just another example of the Los Angeles Angels doing something hella dumb.
