Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Yesterday, the series finale of the Bad Batch was released to tie up its three season run. When the series was announced, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical as it sounded like Star Wars meets A-Team, which would be fun, but seemed like they could have focused on something else.

In fact, the task for Dave Filoni seemed daunting from the on-set. Create a spin off show from one of your most popular shows, demonstrate the rise of the empire and its effect on the clones, but also show the seeds of the rebellion, and oh by the way keep building the case that the Rise of Skywalker makes total sense.

But after watching the series, they did a great job of hitting on all of those. More importantly, it wasn’t just an A-Team clone with clones. It was a great story of raising a “child” in the midst of chaos and trying to give them a life while also kinda making them into John Connor from T2.

The team that put this together was able to do all that while also creating some great villains and in the finale providing them with satisfying deaths. They showed restraint when it came to Omega’s possible force abilities, the force sensitive children and their role in the escape, and not giving everyone a redemption arc. I also enjoyed how they “fixed” Crosshair’s shooting hand.

One of the things I was worried about with them using Mount Tantiss, was that it could be problematic for the Thrawn storylines of the future. In the Legends books, Mount Tantiss played an important role. With it being seemingly shut down, I think it is close enough to what the books had for it to be used. And of course, they finally paid off the Zillo Beast, so that’ll be there chilling when Thrawn arrives.

In the end, years later, Omega is off to join the rebellion and they end the show with a sweet father daughter moment. Which is also a bit funny because Omega is older than Hunter. I appreciate that there wasn’t anything further about who she was joining up with specifically or her role in the rebellion or even if she lives. Overall, a great show that I would recommend to any Star Wars fan.
