Am I A P*ssy For Not Buying A $1,000 Bobblehead?
Last Friday, White Sox Charities held day one of a two day garage sale. For previous Garage Sales, which usually take place only on Saturdays, Wally $ and myself will get in line 5 hours before the sale even opens. Getting through that door first increases your chances of getting the good stuff, believe that. Being that I have responsibilities that can’t be skipped during the week, I wasn’t able to get in line ’til about an hour before they opened the door. I wasn’t too far back, so I was pretty hopeful that some good stuff would be left by the time I got in there.
Now, my collecting is primarily just bobbleheads and I have that covered. The past few years I have been buying helmets, which have seemed to increase in popularity since I decided to buy them too. There are only a few helmets that I don’t have so getting one of those at a sale would be great. But this sale didn’t have any of the ones I was looking for, thankfully. But there was something there that I really wanted. I mean REALLY wanted. Something that would be the cornerstone of my bobblehead collection. Something BeefLoaf and Chorizy would make fun of me for buying. A life-sized Tim Anderson bobblehead. Yes, a 6ft tall bobblehead of TA7.

While in line, Aloha Mr. Hand sent me a text and asked if I was gonna buy it. Apparently Sox Charities posted it on their X / Twitter, Facebook and IG accounts. I was busy AF that Friday so I hadn’t seen it. Which is a good thing because I would have stressed myself out all day, running scenarios that I lose the one thing I was very interested in owning. I got issues, you know this.

We start entering the sale and it looks like I am gonna be part of the 2nd group in the door. But I get stopped right before the door, motherfucker! I’m now gonna be in the 3rd group and the TA is just looking at me. Taunting me. I’m watching people walk up to it and cursing them out in my head. It 100% has a tag on it, but at my advanced age, I can’t see if it’s sold or even the price. 20 slow minutes go by and finally we are let into the sale. I walk right up to the bobble, look at the tag and the price is right there….$1000.

Did I expect a lower price? Yes. The last sale they had an Abreu for ~$700. A sale before that they sold a Chris Sale for a similar price. Now, I ain’t gotta state the obvious, but Abreu and Sale are in a whole different category as far as baseball players. So seeing a higher price was kinda shocking. I start thinking it over. On one hand, my daughter would be thrilled. Timmy has been her favorite player her whole life. It would for sure be a conversation piece for years to come, but I’m not sure it’s worth the asking price. Also, I’d never get my money back from it, it’s 1000% a vanity purchase, not an investment.

I was ready to buy at $500. I even talked myself up to $750, but I couldn’t get to $1,000. After walking around the sale for a bit, I still couldn’t do it. I asked other collectors what they thought and most didn’t think the price was worth it. Now, I’m not saying Sox Charities over-priced it, not in the least. These things cost several thousands to produce. It was just too high for me being who it was. If it was the Southpaw they have at the Chi Sports Depot? I think $1,000 would have been more do-able for me.

After I had really thought it over, I was ready to go. I went to the person who runs the sale to ask her to let me know if it doesn’t sell. And wouldn’t you know it, it sold right then. While that kinda bummed me out I was pretty happy for Sox Charities to get full asking. Especially since the money goes to, you know, charity. I don’t regret it, I can live without it, but it still begs the question – Am I, MySoxSummer, a gigantic pussy for not pulling the trigger on a $1000 bobblehead?
