The One Hitter – Sign Zack Greinke

This is the one hitter, don’t forget to exhale…

If you follow the White Sox at all, you may have heard that they traded Dylan Cease. An expected move that leaves an empty spot in the rotation. In addition to that, Michael Kopech has been moved to the bullpen. Two weeks ago, most people would have had them both penciled in as part of the starting rotation. Now, with two spots to fill, the Sox have been linked to Michael Lorenzen and Mike Clevinger.

Personally, I would like the White Sox to take a different direction. I want the Sox to sign Zack Greinke. And there are a few reasons for it.

First, Greinke has been doing this for 20 years, he’s played for great teams, bad teams, and has had to reinvent himself. It’s not difficult to find articles about his preparation for games and it being unmatched. It’s the exact kind of player Chris Getz continues to describe as what he wants (insert former Royal joke). The way Zack thinks about pitching seems in line with what Brian Bannister wants out of his younger pitchers. This would be a Jake Taylor-esque signing as he’s not at the top of his game anymore, but can be valuable in a lot of other ways. And it’s a signing, that honestly, should make Ethan Katz a little nervous for his job in 2025.

Second, Greinke is a wealth of odd stories and sound bites. For a team lacking much personality, other than Eloy, this would be a welcome addition.

Last, he’s sitting at 2,979 career strikeouts. Only 21 Ks away from the 3000 milestone. In a season where there will likely not be a lot to look forward to, this would be a great achievement to see in person. Hey, even you bobblehead guys might get a cool one out of this.

Is Bannister enough to bring in Greinke for what would likely be his last season? I don’t know, but I’d love to see it.
