Ranking the tracks of the Trainspotting Soundtrack

In our last Sunday Soak, I talked about listening to the Trainspotting Soundtrack for the first time in a while. It’s a great soundtrack and very much captures a moment in time. In February, the album turned 30 (July for the US). I figured I’d do a tier ranking similar to what we’ve done for other albums on their 30th anniversary.

Iconic

Not only are Lust for Life and Born Slippy great tracks, they bookend the film, and for me are forever tied to this film in my brain.

Great

These are songs that I have in playlists on their own merit and while I love them, they live in a status just below the two iconic tracks.

Good

It’s exactly that, these songs are good, but I don’t go out of my way to play them.

Works for the movie

These fit the movie well and weave into the soundtrack, but I’m not searching them out. Atomic for example, is great in the Diane scene. But the actual song is 2 minutes too long in my humble opinion.

Meh

I like Damon, but the song is whatever and isn’t meaningfully placed in the movie. The title track is just way too long at 8 minutes, and this is coming from someone who has played 8 minute instrumental songs regularly.
