Rich and I listen to a lot of the same stuff, so I was curious to find out his favorite album.

Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

First time you heard it

The day before its official release in October 1995, I was lucky enough to be at the World Premier when SP played with Cheap Trick at the Riviera. This was the show that was broadcast on the radio worldwide, only to have the power go out two songs into the set. It was an amazing experience to be at such a small venue and knowing so many people that were listening.

How often do you listen to it?

It’s a big commitment since it’s a 2-hour, 28 song double album, but will jump in randomly and listen to a few songs on a regular basis.

Why is this your favorite album?

I remember all the hype and couldn’t imagine how something could top Siamese Dream. But when I heard it for the first time, it exceeded all expectations; the piano intro still gives me goose bumps. This was peak Pumpkins, and I think the Chicago connection drew in even more fans. Today, the album is pure nostalgia, and IMO captures that ‘90s music vibe. (We were spoiled then) This album still hits, and was one of my first vinyl purchases a few years back. Songs like “Zero”, “Tonight, Tonight” and even “Bullet” are fantastic, but heavy hitters like “Ode”,” Muzzle”, “Bodies”, and “XYU” really make the album. It’s a lot of music for a single release with few skips, except maybe when James is singing. Don’t tell anyone but I may have made a few bucks in HS selling a certain black long sleeve shirt, and probably wore them regularly. When I listen today it’s about that moment in time, and don’t let the other SP drama ruin what was.

Which track would be your walk up music?

An Ode to No One, song is like a roller coaster can’t think of any other way to describe it.
