Frents, I love White Sox Twitter meltdowns. I just do. I fucking love chaos on the socials, especially the sort of chaos that I am pretty close to most of the people fighting, even if I materially like everyone involved. That’s why I created the VERY POPULAR and HUGELY SUCCESSFUL #108Tourney. Anywho, last night we had a fucking doozy and it was set off by the White Sox newly minted Play-By-Play announcer John Schriffen with a back handed comment towards Chicago radio stations.
The 11 second clip is pretty funny, petty and allegedly pointed. Pointed at 670TheScore’s afternoon show Parkins and Spiegel. Below is the suspected impetus for the comment….it’s 8 and a half minutes.
This was my first time listening to the video myself. It’s nit-picky, but I understand where Matt Spiegel is coming from even if I don’t entirely agree. Please watch it to get a feel for this element of the fight. YMMV on how much of this is specific to the presented subject matter and how much stems from other incentives, alliances and grudges.
All Hell Broke Loose!!
It was beautiful to watch!! I love chaos. But what’s really fun is figuring out who the big winners and losers are from this fight. I’ll handicap that below. Full disclosure, I / we (108ers) are pretty friendly with the afternoon show at 670TheScore, as well as John Schriffen, so this should be fun…..LEGGO…
WINNERS
Danny Parkins
Nobody thrives amongst the chaos better than Danny Parkins! Even in the video above, he’s just stoking the fire and getting Matt Spiegel to get deeper and deeper in on his feelings. Danny’s tweet responses were more of a LFG!! than a concern or threatening tone. Monday afternoon mufuckas will line up to hear what he has to say on this topic.
John Schriffen
I thought a thing like this would be a net negative, meaning, the people who already liked Schriff would jump up in rousing applause and those that don’t like him would be dismissive, with a small group of people who don’t have an opinion being turned off by this sort of commentary, but this type stuff started to surface, so he gets a DUB.
Chris Tannehill
The stoic don of Chicago radio sound lets nothing like this bother him. He comes out a big winner just by even people who are anti-670, anti-Afternoon Show being like, but….Chris Tannehill is still the man! I interviewed Chris long-form (see below) and it’s one of the coolest interviews I’ve ever done. CHECK. IT. OUT!!
White Sox Twitter
This is entertainment for us in it’s purest and fwiw it doesn’t really have an effect on us either way. It’s just good ole fashion fun. An accompaniment to the below average baseball we’ll be ingesting all summer. Most of the people that interacted with me during this were of the mind that they enjoy these types of squabbles. Expect more…different ones….but last night was a great night of twitter.
LOSERS
Shane Riordan
I like Shane Riordan. See below when I interviewed him about his journey in sports radio. It’s a very fun interview. But last night was rough for my mans, the anger, the deleted tweets, the temporarily deactivated twitter account. It was, as the kids say, a tough scene. My DM’s weren’t much better on that front. The Tweets dunking on him weren’t even the Shawn Kemp power dunks, they were the Tom Chambers jumping over mufuckas to dunk even harder. He’ll recover from this because he’s good people but oof, whatta night.
ESPN 1000
White Sox Twitter controversy is hot on these streets and not a single person thought about your spot on the dial. That’s an L imo. Even if being neutral can be a really good (and we’ll get to that in a second), the second sports radio station in the second city be missing out on a lot of fun last night.
670 SIMPS
I get it, people got their sides, but when you are also peddling your wares to White Sox fans it’s an odd spot to put yourself in. Maybe it doesn’t matter to your end buyers and possibly just takes you down a notch in your competitors mind.
That’s all I got. I look forward to the next White Sox Twitter skirmish and hope to not catch any shrapnel.
