Hey, it’s your boy MSS! Welcome to 2024! I am back with a series of blogs about changes / improvements / things that I have been wanting to see at 35th & Shields for some time. Yup, just one more asshole complaining about my favorite team’s way of doing things. Some serious, some funny, some will be personal. Let’s start off with one that is very personal to me.
It’s not news to anyone that I collect bobbleheads. In an effort to not drive myself crazy, I have mostly limited myself to only collecting White Sox and personal favorite players. I am quickly running out of space so getting every bobble that I find cool would be tough. But I have to get every White Sox because of the sickness I have with being a completist.
In the bobblehead world, they have become very detailed and the limits are being pushed for the resin based dolls! Wall climbs, bat flips and boundaries are being pushed. Coming up with something new is pretty tough but once in a while an organization does something unique. And that happened this past summer.
Having a set of bobbleheads that fit together is nothing new. Many teams have released sets that the bases fit together. It’s a great way to guarantee getting multiple people at selected games in a given year. A lot of minor league teams do it, but this summer I saw something I had never seen before. It all started when I saw this bobblehead of my buddy John Daly…
Pretty sweet huh? The Ascension Charity Golf Classic has raised over $1 million for charities in north St. Louis…and they dropped this million dollar bobblehead. The logo on the pants, wow. I saw this and was very tempted to buy one. But look at that base, yeah, it’s one of a few. But what other bobbles will complete the set?
Well look at that! In addition to Daly, you get St Louis Cardinal David Freese & St. Louis Blues Robert Thomas. Nothing THAT special right? Oh baby, get ready for this! To get all three bobbleheads you had to attend 3 DIFFERENT THEME NIGHTS! I have never seen this, a cross-promotion between 3 organizations, 3 events, to complete a series. My mind was blown like JMac in the back of a passenger van.
First was Golf Night at Busch Stadium, on August 28th. You got the David Freese by buying a theme night ticket. Then you needed to go to the golf classic to get the John Daly on September 9th. Finally, to complete the set you needed to buy a Blues theme night ticket on October 19th. That’s amazing and had to be a fun project for collectors to complete.
I know what you are thinking, “MSS, how can the White Sox do this in a unique manner?” I thought you’d NEVER ask. Here’s something I wanna see…
The owner of our favorite team, Jerry Reinsdorf, doesn’t have a bobblehead. Think about that. Put aside your current feelings about Jerry, BUT the man has helped bring 7 championships to the City Of Chicago. He is certainly deserving to be honored by both of his teams, IMO. And what a perfect way to do it by combining a couple of his favorite things.
Getting both fan bases to attend his other organization is fucking brilliant. I don’t know Jerry, but selling more tickets might be something that get’s him excited. If I owned two teams, I would welcome the extra scratch. PLUS, doesn’t everyone wanna be honored for something they helped do? I’d think so.
My idea for the bobblehead is very similar to this picture with a few modifications.
First, I want a nice stoogie in Jerry’s mouth. The man loves his cigars. I don’t think this will happen, kids and shit, but it should.
Next, I want Jerry in two phases of his championship winning career. For the White Sox side, let’s have the Parade Jerry. Clad in the champs hat, sweet leather jacket, pleated khakis holding the last out baseball from Paul Konerko. Standing on grass World Series trophy, beside him. Two NBA trophies behind it. This will be a SGA (Stadium Give Away) release, first 20k. And let’s make the game one we know people will struggle to go to. Think Royals early season. 45 degrees in the sun.
For the Bulls release, I need Jerry in full 90’s gear. Snazzy suit, power tie, huge round glasses, you remember that look right? It was so choice.
Jerry will be on the Bulls floor, holding a NBA trophy. To his left 3 NBA trophies. The bases fit together, we have 2 bobbles of Jerry, tons of trophies and all the rings. This thing gonna shine like Slick Rick. I’m already excited.
There you have it, a great idea that serves all. We get a new and cool bobblehead featuring someone we haven’t gotten yet. It also helps Jerry sell more tickets to both of his teams, making him more money. No doubt we’re not all on the same page here, why not X (tweet) me why I’m wrong? You can catch me on @fromthe108 and @mysoxsummer! Happy New Year!
